Definition:
Pharmacy is the department that gives full-pharmaceutical Services to patients and provides medications, information, and education in collaboration with other health professionals in order to achieve the safe use of drugs and the ultimate goal of health-care in a cost-effective manner.
The Mission:
The Pharmacy Department will provide the highest quality and most efficient pharmaceutical services as stated in the pharmaceutical legislation. We ensure that all our staffs are competent and professionally qualified to provide the most excellent service for both patients and our healthcare team.


Pharmaceutical Services:
King Fahd Military Medical Complex is a 320-bed tertiary care referral hospital which is encompassing several medical specialties as well as subspecialties such as open-heart, renal transplant, neuro-surgery, special areas…etc. The Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides chemotherapy, immunotherapy, nutritional support services, IV-admixture/sterile preparations, Unit-Dose System, antipsychotic therapy, compounding non-sterile drug (extemporaneous) preparations controlled substances…etc.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at KFMMC is consisting of seven pharmacies, one-main-ambulatory care pharmacy (outpatient), one main inpatient pharmacy, one ER Pharmacy and three satellite clinic pharmacies as well as one Controlled Drugs Pharmacy. Successfully in the recent years we had the full range of our hospital pharmaceutical services completely computerized.
Grading System:
Pharmacy staffs have the following job titles in accordance with their qualifications:
- Director of Pharmacy Services.
- Deputy Pharmacy Director.
- Pharmacy Supervisor.
- Senior Pharmacists.
- Pharmacist Grade I.
- Pharmacists Grade II.
- Pharmacists Grade III.
- Pharmacy Technicians Supervisor.
- Senior Pharmacy Technicians.
- Pharmacy Technicians.
- Inventory Clerk.
- Pharmacy Technical Secretary.
- Pharmacy Aide.
Pharmacy hours:
- Inpatient Pharmacy Services: 24 hours a day.
- Outpatient Pharmacy Services: 07:30 – 24:00 hours everyday.
- Emergency Room Pharmacy: 24:00 – 07:30 am on daily basis.
- Controlled Drug Pharmacy: 07:30 – 16:00 hours excluding Thursdays & Fridays.
- 3 Satellite Clinics: 07:30 – 16:00 hours excluding Thursdays & Fridays.
- Refill prescriptions: 07:30 – 16:30 hours except weekends (Thursdays & Fridays).
Developments:
- Full range of pharmaceutical services computerized by 2001.
- Amending pharmacy staff database trice 2001, 2005 & 2007.
- Accommodating the system and orienting the Saudi and Middle East pharmacists in order to work in the Inpatient Pharmacy (2001).
- Decentralizing the hospital pharmaceutical services (2001).
- Expanding Outpatient Pharmacy area (2002).
- Expanding and redesigning Inpatient Pharmacy area (May 2005).
- Implementation of Automatic TPN compounder (March 2004).
- 24-hours-coverage of the Inpatient Pharmacy Services (Nov. 2004).
- Educational activities such as participations in conferences and symposia as well as publishing some articles.
- Determine pharmacy staff responsibilities.
- Organizing the 3rd KFMMC International Pharmacy Conference Oct. 2002) and inviting international speakers from USA.
- Electronic KFMMC Formulary placed on hospital network 2007.
Future Plan:
To implement the following Clinical Pharmacy Services and create new job titles for clinical pharmacists.
I- Short tem
- Placing drug information system on the pharmacy network e.g. micromedix.
- placing pharmacy department’s rules/ regulations, job description and duty responsibilities on the pharmacy network.
- Placing kfmmc formulary on pharmacy network.
- Increase the number of pharmacists & technicians in the pharmacy staffing database.
- Implement effective prescribing policies.
II- Long term:
- Implement clinical Pharmacy Services.
- Drug usage evaluations (DUE).
- Clinical pharmacokinetics.
- Patient Counseling.
- Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) program.
- Medication errors
Education:
KFMMC is recognized preceptor by King Saud University, Riyadh in providing Internship training for one academic semester for pharmacy students. Pharmacy Department is conducting continuing education programs for pharmacy staff.
